bizzell's garage

26/03/17

The bright red, yellows and greens reminded me of Franklin Mendez's primary coloured jackets (from MAKEOUT America). The old petrol bowsers stood unassumingly behind the vintage racks with 'Bizzell's Garage' in the background. Everyone was confident and edgy and shy at the same time. There was a wine bottle wrapped up in a wrinkled brown-paper bag, capped and being passed around to take swigs out of. Everyone, even the seemingly 'good' ones were smoking hand-rolled cigs like it was a natural occurrence, reminding me of the way Parisians do. One girl in particular, caught my eye. She was wearing a baby pink, ribbed top, flat across the bust with two straps. She wasn't flaunting her bralessness but it was just another part of her personality like the bulky-framed sunnies she held in her hand. She had longish blonde hair and a pair of jeans to top it off - blue and straight with an embroidery up the side (I would kill for a pair like these!). She had on black slides which donned a fluffy pom pom on the front. The girl who owned the stall was bronzed and wore a black sporty crop, tights and a black bumbag slung over her shoulder. When she smiled, I caught a glimpse of the gap in the middle of her upper front teeth.

Vintage Markets
Every 8 weeks Sunday (next one is 14th March)
Bizzell's Garage (old petrol station next to Paddington Woolworths)
Selling an array of clothing and accessories (predominantly all vintage brands)

Exactly two weeks later, I decided to hold a garage sale of my own. It was pretty badly advertised and we didn't have heaps of stuff to sell but I was so inspired I had one anyway. I whipped up some brownies and some oaty, ginger  slice, laid everything out in our driveway and put on a killer playlist for my sister, our friend Ava and I to dance to. I was astounded by the friendliness of neighbours and sitting there in an old director's chair - resorting to reading Frankie by now - I realised how little I have connected with my street. I enjoyed seeing people walk up to the nearest cafes and back again; kids' heads turning in their car seats as we waved them down and couples driving by debating about whether or not they should stop.
